A good laundry needs to be functional and well-organised. Not all homes have enough space for a laundry they want, but you could make it happen with a little improvisation and creativity. For example, if you do not have enough space for a linen cupboard, you could place it in the hallway as a built-in. There is a range of options when it comes to organising the laundry to make it more practical and efficient. We can help you with some of our ideas.
The best laundry room designs are those that are built with convenience and enjoyment in mind. Like it or not, you’ll spend a lot of time doing laundry, so you might as well make the room a space that’s not only efficient, but also someplace you enjoy.
Whether you are thinking about updating your exiting laundry room or building a new one, it is worth thinking about what type of appliances you want to have, how much counter space, sink space, do you need to include space to hang clothes, and how much storage you want?
To help, below are a few things to keep in mind and consider when updating or building a new laundry room in your home.
Storage
Storage is key for a beautiful and functional laundry, so you need a good amount of storage space. There’s the obvious laundry supplies such as detergent, dryer sheets and stain remover, and also iron and ironing board. However, you’ll most likely also find this room to be a handy place to store other home necessity items such as light bulbs, brooms, vacuums and other whatnots.
When talking about storage, you can consider open shelving, base or overhead cabinets, tall or even custom-made cabinets. Use of cabinets with doors makes the room look clean and tidy, but can also be utilised to hide plumbing. The type and amount of cabinets you want to put in your laundry will depend on the things you want to store there.
Counter Space
Build in as much counter space as possible. More often than not, laundry baskets, detergents and other laundry supplies find a home, if only temporarily, on the counter. So the more counter space you have, the better.
If you have adequate counter space you’ll be able to easily work on several tasks without the frustration of picking up in between. Likewise, the extra counter space (and cabinets) can be especially useful if you intend to use the room for more than just laundry. For example, a mud room or ‘washing-your-pet’ room.
